Redundant auditory icons are used with visual information to investigate their influence on the categorization. Results are related to earlier experiments with redundant earcons and show that reaction times are faster in conditions with auditory icons than conditions with no sound, and conditions with earcons are slower than conditions with no sound. Having sound does not always lead to faster responses. It seems that the type of sound and its congruency with visual information can have an effect.

Memory for Auditory Icons and Earcons with Localization Cues
This study was designed to test whether associations between visual icons on a computer screen and auditory icons (environmental sounds that have a direct association with an object) or earcons (synthetic sounds that have no direct association with an object) are easier to learn. In addition, localization of sound presentation relative to the position of the icons on the screen was tested. Resu...
متن کاملSpearcons: Speech-based Earcons Improve Navigation Performance in Auditory Menus
With shrinking displays and increasing technology use by visually impaired users, it is important to improve usability with non-GUI interfaces such as menus. Using non-speech sounds called earcons or auditory icons has been proposed to enhance menu navigation. We compared search time and accuracy of menu navigation using four types of auditory representations: speech only; hierarchical earcons;...
متن کاملCultural Differences in Preference of Auditory Emoticons: Usa and South Korea
For the last two decades, research on auditory displays and sonification has continuously increased. However, most research has focused on cognitive and functional mapping rather than emotional mapping. Moreover, there has not been much research on cultural differences on auditory displays. The present study compared user preference of auditory emoticons in two countries: USA and South Korea. S...
متن کاملEmpirically Derived Multimedia Design Guidelines for Browsing Large Volumes of E-Mail Data
This paper introduces multimedia design guidelines for browsing large volumes of e-mail data. These software design guidelines derived from two sets of experiments under a prototype version of a multimedia e-mail tool. The experiments tested various forms of audiovisual communication metaphors. For example, the auditory stimuli consisted of musical sounds (earcons), compositional sounds, enviro...
متن کاملProviding A Model For The Use Of Sound In User Interfaces
This paper provides an introduction to auditory interfaces and suggests some future work will make their development more straightforward. A review of the basic concepts of psychoacoustics is provided as without the knowledge of how humans perceive sounds, interfaces which use them effectively cannot be designed. Pitch and loudness perception, localization and auditory pattern recognition are d...
